Why is all-steel raised access flooring the preferred choice for server rooms?

Server rooms (especially high-value, high-requirement sites such as data centers and communication facilities) preferentially adopt all-steel raised floors due to their comprehensive performance advantages and strong alignment with the core needs of such environments. Key reasons are analyzed as follows:

1. Load-Bearing Capacity and Structural Strength

  • Ultra-High Load Capacity: All-steel construction is formed from high-quality cold-rolled steel plates, with internal reinforcement using high-strength foamed cement or stiffeners. Its load capacity (uniform load up to 12.5 kN/m², concentrated load over 25 kN) far exceeds other types of raised floors, ensuring stable support for heavy cabinets, UPS units, and precision air conditioning equipment.

  • Impact and Deformation Resistance: The steel structure exhibits excellent toughness, resisting cracking or deformation under long-term loads or localized pressure (e.g., equipment handling or wheeled carts), maintaining permanent floor flatness and preventing issues such as cabinet doors jamming or airflow leakage.

2. Fire Safety

  • Class A Non-Combustible: Steel itself is non-combustible, meeting the highest fire rating standards (GB Class A, UL Class 1). In the event of fire, it does not ignite or emit toxic smoke, providing a passive fire barrier for the server room.

  • Structural Fire Resistance: The floor maintains structural integrity for an extended period during a fire, protecting cables beneath and buying time for firefighting and emergency response.

3. Electromagnetic Shielding and Static Protection

  • Intrinsic EMI Shielding: Steel flooring forms a continuous metallic shield, effectively reducing external electromagnetic interference on sensitive equipment. For rooms with special shielding requirements (e.g., financial trading or military command centers), welded all-steel floors can be used to achieve higher shielding levels.

  • Reliable ESD Protection: Through the combination of surface finishes (HPL/PVC) and the steel substrate, surface resistance can be stably controlled within 10^6–10^9 Ω, preventing static buildup from damaging electronic components.

4. Adaptation to Precision Air Conditioning and Airflow Management

  • Excellent Underfloor Plenum Performance: The all-steel floor and pedestal system form a sealed, rigid plenum, ensuring uniform, leak-free delivery of cold air to cabinet fronts—a critical foundation for hot/cold aisle containment and improved cooling efficiency.

  • High Flatness and Tight Sealing: Closely fitted panels prevent short-circuiting of cold air, ensuring the effectiveness of airflow management design and directly lowering PUE.

5. Durability and Maintenance Convenience

  • Moisture and Corrosion Resistance: Surfaces are treated with phosphating and electrostatic powder coating, offering rust and corrosion protection. Even under humidity fluctuations or minor water exposure, steel floors remain stable, far outperforming wood or composite-based floors.

  • Ease of Maintenance and Replacement: Modular design allows single panels to be quickly removed for cabling, inspection, or expansion. Floor surfaces are wear-resistant, scratch-resistant, and easy to clean.

6. Environmental Friendliness and Compliance

  • Recyclable Materials: Steel structures are nearly 100% recyclable, aligning with green building concepts.

  • Low Emissions: No adhesives are used in production, resulting in extremely low formaldehyde emissions (typically E0/ENF grade), ensuring high indoor air quality in server rooms.

Advantages Compared with Other Materials

Comparison Item All-Steel Floor Calcium Sulphate Floor Composite Wood-Based Floor
Load Limit Highest, suitable for ultra-heavy equipment High, but may slightly deform under prolonged heavy loads Low, prone to collapse
Fire Resistance Non-combustible (Class A) Non-combustible (Class A) Flame-retardant, but organic components may ignite
Moisture Resistance Completely impervious to water Excellent, but prolonged soaking may cause damage Poor, prone to swelling and rot when wet
Electromagnetic Shielding Intrinsic advantage Requires additional shielding layer None
Economics Higher initial cost, but lower lifecycle cost High initial cost, but overall cost-effective Low initial cost, high maintenance cost
